Codat is an API that handles the heavy lifting of integrating with financial software providers, freeing businesses to focus on how integrations can improve their product for their customers. Codat powers the products and services used by small businesses by making accounting and banking integrations easy.

How did the idea for the business originate?
The core team was working at MarketInvoice, building integrations with accounting packages. Having experienced the pain of managing integrations with multiple accounting and financial software providers we decided to build a product to make this process as quick and easy as possible.

Do you have customers yet? If not, how far into your business lifecycle are you?
We now have over 30 customers, including banks, insurers, payments processors and software providers to small businesses.

How have you funded your growth to date?
Codat has been funded through revenue and from a select group of angel investors, including past and present Directors of Santander, St James’s Place and Western Union and the former Head of Strategy at Microsoft.

What would a successful 2018 look like for you?
In 2018, we have dramatically expanded both our coverage of different small business financial packages and sectors in which the Codat platform is being used and almost tripled the size of the team. Next year, we’re looking to add more data connections outside of the UK and to keep expanding the sectors which use us.

Outside of your own business, which start up do you admire the most and why? 
We look up to Plaid in the US a lot, who have done an amazing job of building a financial data product that’s amazing to work with as a developer, while also ensuring that it’s absolutely best-in-class from a business perspective.
