Year Founded: 2017

How did the idea for the business originate?

DataChemist is a deep-tech spin-out from Trinity College Dublin. The company emerged from the Horizon 2020 supported ALIGNED project, which was led by the DataChemist CEO. In 2017, the first full production system was implemented for the Seshat Global History Data Bank project. The success of this roll-out prompted the commercialisation of the technology.

Do you have customers yet? If not, how far into your business lifecycle are you?

DataChemist is working with Wolters Kluwer to deliver a commercial intelligence product. We migrated a legacy SQL-based commercial intelligence application to enable a new generation of services to exploit the legacy data. We are currently working with several other commercial intelligence and financial sector clients and delivering new insights from existing data.

How have you funded your growth to date?

We received backing from Atlantic Bridge University Bridge Fund and Enterprise Ireland in the middle of 2018. This funding has allowed us to build out our technology, grow our team, establish a market and build new partnerships.

What would a successful year look like for you?

We are a new but highly ambitious Irish company. When building a highly disruptive product or company that at its core relies on radical new technology, it’s crucial to make sure your initial customers are happy. A great 2018 would have a strong group of happy DataChemist customers with positive engagement and radically improved insight into their data.

Outside of your own business, which start up do you admire the most and why?

We are big fans of Stripe in DataChemist. The thoughtfulness of their leadership and their ability to scale both a technical solution and an organisation is very impressive. We’re planning to follow in their footsteps by growing DataChemist through innovation and by bringing the best people on board.
