This talk will showcase MITRE’s approach to innovation in the field quantum technology through the full-stack co-design research of materials, device, and instrument platforms informed by application and end user needs. Our approach to research is exemplified in our projects exploiting the quantum phenomena in nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color center defects in diamonds. The NV-center defects act as molecule-sized quantum sensors with exquisite sensitivity to magnetic fields, enabling wide-area, micron-scale-resolution magnetic field imaging that captures vector information at fast imaging time scales. Magnetic field imaging with a Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM) engineered for this purpose offers a uniquely effective way to measure integrated circuit activity based on the magnetic fields emanated from current flowing through the circuits. The MITRE Corporation leverages a systems engineering approach to accelerate emerging technologies like the Quantum Diamond Microscope and other quantum sensors towards impactful applications. This talk will offer insights into the world of quantum sensing, its unique properties, and its potential applications in the realm of integrated circuits.
