dunnhumby helps retailers improve business outcomes using data science. Much of that is done through solving of business optimization problems, such as optimization of product prices, the promotional strategy, and even the space allocated to products on the shelves. Those optimization problems are typically high-dimensional and heavily constrained. Quantum computing offers the possibility to solve these challenges, but only through efficient use of the limited quantum compute resources available to us at this current time. In this talk I will present work from a recent collaboration between dunnhumby and Durham University in the UK that significantly reduces the number of qubits needed to represent the constraints in an example problem. I will also discuss the future potential of quantum computing for retail data science
