Jose Pizarro

José Pizarro explores quantum technologies for space and secure communications at ESA. He has a habit of mixing blunt skepticism with orbit-level perspective, calling out quantum snake oil while spotlighting what really works. His talks swap jargon for metaphors (chocolate keys, telegraph stations, miracle elixirs) to help audiences cut through the hype without losing the fun.

Exhibition Day 1

4:00 PM International collaboration in quantum technologies - navigating quantum nationalism and workforce challenges

  • How can international collaboration accelerate innovation while balancing national security interests?
  • What strategies are effective in building a globally competitive and diverse quantum workforce?
  • How can businesses and governments align to reduce friction from “quantum nationalism” and unlock shared opportunities?

11:30 AM Quantum Snake Oil: Separating Hype from Hardware in Quantum Tech

Quantum is the new cure-all. It’s supposed to fix cybersecurity, supercharge AI, solve climate change, and—if you believe the marketing—even beam your emails faster than light. The problem? Not all of it works as advertised.

This talk takes a deliberately irreverent look at the hype and the hardware: why QKD is both the most famous and most misunderstood “quantum cure,” and why post-quantum cryptography (and a few satellites) might actually matter.
Delivered by someone working at a space agency (where miracle cures are tested against the vacuum of reality), this session doesn’t sell oil. It separates the bottles worth keeping from those best left on the shelf & the role of satellites in all of it —and promises a few laughs along the way.
