A.M. Barrett is a cognitive neurologist, neurorehabilitation physician, and Chair of the Department of Neurology at UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health. She holds the UMass Memorial Chair in Neurology and serves as Neurology Service Line Chief for the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System. Her career has focused on making hidden problems, visible. Through studies of brain-behavior relationships, spatial cognition, and right-brain rehabilitation, she built clinical and research programs that enhance patient and caregiver experience, improve outcomes, and promote independence. Her work integrates research, education, and patient care in service of improving the lifetime health of people living with neurologic disease. Today, Dr. Barrett's research focuses on two areas: right brain rehabilitation, and the development of practical approaches to identifying cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease through measures of everyday function, with the goal of detecting cognitive problems before traditional symptoms are apparent.
