Dr. Karina Hoan is a board-certified OB/GYN and fellowship-trained minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon, and Medical Director for Surgical Specialties at The Portland Clinic in Portland, Oregon. Her clinical focus centers on chronic pelvic pain and endometriosis, conditions that are frequently misdiagnosed and underserved; patients typically see six providers before an accurate diagnosis. She is currently collaborating on a blood-based diagnostic trial for endometriosis showing 90% sensitivity in early testing. At 45, Dr. Hoan's own experience with perimenopause, including a breakdown in her athletic training that standard hormone protocols failed to resolve, revealed a gap she had unknowingly been passing on to her own patients: menopause care that is inconsistent not from a lack of physician effort, but from a lack of education and clinical infrastructure. She pursued additional training in bioidentical hormone optimization and built HOT (Hormone Optimization Therapy), a clinical decision-support platform that helps physicians deliver individualized, evidence-based hormone care within a normal office visit. Dr. Hoan founded STAR International during her OB/GYN residency and has completed more than a dozen international surgical missions across seventeen countries. Outside of medicine, she is an ultramarathoner, rock climber, and mother of three.
