2:30 PM Panel: Why Chronic Disease Looks Different in Women and How Health Systems Have Adapted

  • Overview of chronic diseases with female predominance.
  • Focus on the science/biology behind the female predominance of autoimmune disorders.
  • Health inequities women face in chronic disease, with a case study on lupus.
  • How delayed diagnosis, unequal access to specialist care, gaps in research funding, and limited awareness of sex specific disease presentation have led to poorer outcomes for women living with lupus, particularly women from marginalized communities
  • How we can advocate for a shift toward personalized coverage models, ensuring that if a treatment is proven effective for a specific subset of women (based on genetics, hormonal stage, or background), reimbursement frameworks evolve to support targeted access rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
